Did you work at the asylum ?
Were you Former patient ?
Mr Liam Duffy (nurse)
.i went there to train as a mental health nurse as a 18yr old in 1987. i worked as a nurse from 1990 to 19994. it was great fun, so many good memories. the parties were legendry. we looked after the patients very well, there was a great sense of community, not like now .
.
At the young age of just 17 and 9 months, I started my career at West Park in 1981 as a nursing assistant. A group of approx 20 + guys and girls came from Wales to start are new life and career. It was exciting times. It was a great place to work and the patients were looked after very well. We took them on day trips, bought their favourite chocolates and had a knees up at Christmas. We tried to make it like home. A lot of elderly were put in these type of hospitals, only being a 'little confused, but certainly not MENTAL. There was lock up wards, for the more disturbed patients, like Drummond., who for example caught syphilis when they were younger, they would have not been treated for this, subsequently leaving them totally confused, some insane.
My five years of being at West park, was a wonderful experience, after all, I met my husband there, and still happily married 25 years this July. My two witnesses were husbands of two lovely ladies I nursed back in 1985.
I am still in contact with a few of my old work colleagues, we get together now and then, to reminisce of the good old times at West Park Hospital!
Regards,
Merie (Stephens)
1981-to late 1985
